The past decade has brought both the growing success of cancer therapies and tremendous advancements in fertility treatment. Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), which was first available at only a handful of clinics in the US in 1994, is now available in almost every metropolitan area.  Egg freezing success has significantly improved and is more readily available. Current research on ovarian tissue cryopreservation is yielding exciting results. These advancements in technology have increased the need to focus on the long-term reproductive life of cancer patients. High-profile individuals such as Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, have utilized fertility preservation prior to their treatments to ensure future parenthood. • Most sperm banking appointments are available for scheduling within 1 to 3 days of the initial call.  While it is advantageous for patients to bank all semen specimens prior to beginning therapies that can result in sterility, recent studies have shown that viable samples can be collected in the early stages of some treatments.
• The cryopreservation options for women described are available at a limited number of centers and do require significant coordination between the fertility specialists, oncology clinic and patient.
